Boston holds its 2nd annual Basketball Tournament
Six teams competed this year in Boston’s annual basketball tournament. Two of the teams represented active SOP chapters from Boston and Waterbury, CT. The tournament was structured with a double elimination bracket, allowing each team to play at least two games. The two teams in the winner’s bracket were Worcester A and the Waterbury SOP chapter. Waterbury was defeated and moved into the loser’s bracket. In the semi-finals, Peabody and Waterbury battled into double overtime. In the last minutes, Peabody pulled ahead to win it 66-62.
Soon after, Peabody faced the Worcester A team in the finals. The score was close the entire game. With only seconds left and Peabody up by two points, the Worcester A team made one last attempt for a tie. Peabody took home the championship trophy with a 46-44 win.
Awards given included:
MVP: Vasilli Frangias (Peabody)
Allstars: Matt Dzietzek (Worcester A), Cliff Shultz (Worcester B), Art Ververis (Waterbury SOP), and George Markopoulos (Worcester B)
I am enthused to have seen the participation and competitiveness during this year’s tournament. The teams were very excited to play and impressed with how smooth the tournament operations were conduction.
The Boston Sons or Pericles are striving to impress upon members as well as the Greek youth of Massachusetts the values of Hellenism and AHEPA. AHEPA has always strived to meet the athletic needs of our community while Hellenism instills the value of individual excellence. Moving forward, related to our basketball tournaments, our chapter intends to uphold those pillars.
