THE EXCITEMENT OF REACTIVATING A CHAPTER IN ATLANTA, GA

With opportunity comes great responsibility. This is the phrase that has been going through my head these past few days. Having recently been elected President of the newly activated Adelphi Chapter in Atlanta, GA, I find myself with a great opportunity in my hands. From day one, I have experienced nothing but encouragement and motivation from our sponsoring AHEPA Chapter. Everywhere I turn, an atmosphere of excitement fills the air as new blood is being infused into this wonderful Fraternity of ours.

This opportunity is unlike any other which has come across my path. Having attended Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA for four years now, I have managed to avoid entering into what is commonly known as “Greek Life”, or a fraternity. While being pursued by various “Greek” brothers on campus, I always managed to come up with some excuse as to why I did not want to join; time commitment, money, priorities,etc. The real reason however was my reluctance to commit to an organization with which I did not feel a strong connection. Further, I have always longed to be a part of some greater cause, something worth sacrificing for, something great!

I now find myself with this wonderful opportunity that I had been yearning for, thanks be to God! Not only am I part of the brotherhood, but I have the unique opportunity to help shape the future for our local chapter and hopefully our inactive district in the near future. This is a cause that I have pledged my allegiance to and believe in. Fraternizing with my fellow Hellene’s and Philhellenes whom I have grown up with over the years is a dream come true for me. However, I do not plan on only fraternizing this year, but accomplishing much more to create a lifelong bond of meaningful brotherhood and fulfill the mission and goals of the Sons of Pericles.

With the guidance of our local AHEPA Chapter No. 1 and their enthusiastic support, I believe that with God’s grace we will accomplish many great things this year! I am very excited and motivated and hope that I can effectively diffuse my dynamism unto my fellow brethren. I will leave you with a quote which has been inspiring to me over the past few days and which every Greek knows by heart:

“Until now, we knew that Greeks were fighting like heroes;
from now on we shall say that the heroes fight like Greeks.”

~Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Britain – 1940

BOSTON SOP CHRISTMAS PARTY REVIEW

The Boston AHEPA hosted its annual Christmas Party on December 12th at the Cathedral Center in Brookline, MA. The focus of this year’s dinner and reception was to recognize the ever increasing number of Greek-American and Phil-Hellenes who are joining the AHEPA and the Sons of Pericles and those who make that possible. Represented at the dinner was Supreme Governor Alex Geourntas, and Board of the AHEPA Member Constantine Calliontzis. Past Supreme President of the Sons of Pericles and current Boston AHEPA Vice President, Demetrios Vidalis was also in attendance.

During the dinner, the presentation of the prestigious Sons of Pericles Life-Time Member Award was bestowed to select members of the AHEPA. This is an award given to those individuals who have made it their life to do everything within their grasp to serve the fraternal Order of the Sons of Pericles. The AHEPA, along with the Sons of Pericles of Boston, thank these individuals for inspiring a new generation of leaders within the Sons of Pericles.

Also in attendance were three siblings, two of which were later initiated into the Sons Boston Chapter, and their sister who is aspiring to start a Maids of Athena chapter. HOUSTON, TX SOP CHAPTER REACTIVATION

On Monday, January 11, 2010 the Sam Houston Chapter #89 of the Sons of Pericles was reactivated in Houston, TX. The reactivation is attributed to the efforts of the Alexander the Great AHEPA Chapter in Houston along with the support and assistance of the SOP Supreme Lodge. Several AHEPA members were able to gather a group of interested young men to reactivate the Sons of Pericles Chapter.

Immediately after the members' initiation, the Chapter held officer elections. Constantine Thanos was elected as the new Chapter President. Through his leadership, the chapter looks to continue their growth by initiating more members into the chapter and fulfilling the goals of the Sons of Pericles. The Supreme Lodge looks forward to the many great things that this Chapter will accomplish for years to come. We welcome these brothers to our Order.
