WYCKOFF, NJ SONS OF PERICLES HOST EASTERN REGIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

On the weekend of April 24-25, 2010, the Wyckoff, NJ Sons of Pericles Patritha Chapter #317 hosted the Eastern Regional Basketball Tournament. This was the Wyckoff Sons 5th year in a row hosting the tournament. The organizational effort was spearheaded by Supreme President Dean Tselepis and the Chapter Officers led by President Arthur Kominos, Secretary John Vittas, Treasurer Vasili Ikonomidis and Athletic Director Nick Apostolou.

There were eight basketball teams comprised of Sons from all over the East Coast. While a majority of the teams were from New Jersey, there were also teams who traveled from Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York. Other players, fans, and Maids of Athena also came to support the tournament from Minnesota, Nevada, Michigan, Connecticut, Georgia, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and Washington, D.C. A Sons Chapter from Westfield, NJ was reactivated at the tournament with all six of the players being initiated into the Order by the Wyckoff chapter officers and District #5 Sons Advisor Ted Vittas.

The double elimination tournament was played at St. Nicholas Church in Wyckoff, NJ. The tournament winners were Middlesex, NJ while Virginia came in 2nd Place and 3rd Place went to Cherry Hill, NJ. The Tournament MVP was awarded to George Karis of Middlesex, NJ.

On Saturday night a party was held at Central Lounge in Astoria, NY. (www.centrallounge.com) The owners of the club were kind enough to make a generous donation towards the Sons of Pericles Dual National Projects.

The weekend was a great success and the Sons from Wyckoff, NJ hope to continue the tradition. Proceeds from the weekend’s events will go towards St. Nicholas and the Sons National Projects. The Sons National Projects are The ALS Association (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in honor of Brother George Catsulis and the Cyprus Children’s Fund.

BOSTON SONS PUT ON TWO EVENTS IN APRIL

April was a big month for the Boston HUB #27 Chapter and its members. On Sunday, April 18th, our Chapter and the Federation of American Hellenic Societies of New England coordinated and hosted a cultural evening in order to prepare and promote the 16th Annual Greek Independence Day Parade in Boston. The night was filled with dance performances from multiple groups followed by the Miss Greek Independence Day Pageant. We were fortunate enough to have been given this opportunity. We were allowed to help set up, distribute pamphlets, sell raffle tickets, recruit young women for the pageant and then help clean up. This was also a great opportunity to get our name out there, show that we are active in the local Greek community, and ultimately recruit new members. The highlight of the evening for us was the picture (RIGHT) taken of a few SOP members and Spyridon Zagaris, the Mayor of the city of Marathon in Greece. This year marked the 2500th Anniversary of the running of the Marathon and we were proud to support the cause. The Mayor said after the picture that he was proud of the Greeks in America and he will take the pride and honor that he has seen here back to Marathon and show his constituents and fellow citizens what we are doing in order to support Greece.

Our other April event took place on Friday, April 23rd and it was our 3rd Annual Red Sox Outing. Years past proved successful and we were more than happy and willing to continue this event. Everyone showed up early to the Boston Annunciation Cathedral where we held a barbeque and gave out door prizes. Our $48 ticket price included the game, food and free parking. This was a great opportunity for a mixer between the Sons and AHEPANs. Besides our local Sons, the Waterbury, CT Sons were also in attendance.

That night, the Red Sox were facing the Baltimore Orioles. Despite our loyalty to the Red Sox, we all cheered for Baltimore’s right fielder and top player Nick Markakis, a fellow Greek and brother AHEPAN. Our section was directly behind the Red Sox bullpen and Markakis himself. We made sure that he was aware of our presence. It was a close game, but our home team pulled through with the victory. Keep a look out for this event next year!

3RD ANNUAL WATERBURY, CT HALL OF FAME LUNCHEON AN ANNUAL SUCCESS STORY

The Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena of Waterbury, CT held the Third Annual Hall of Fame Luncheon on April 11, 2010 honoring an accomplished member of the local church community, Mary Voulgaris. The Hall of Fame Luncheon was created on the premise that recognition is among the highest forms of flattery, and for three years straight the Sons and Maids of Waterbury have been selecting worthy recipients and attracting large crowds.

Most of the food was donated from local businesses, as well as the wine and drinks that were served, creating a network of supporters for when the chapter hosts other events throughout the year. Not only are these events a financial success, but they are creating much needed exposure for the Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena within the local community at large. The Sons and Maids of Waterbury look forward to holding this event on an annual basis for many years to come.

SONS OF PERICLES MEMBERS ASKED TO CONNECT COLLEGE-AGE STUDENTS TO NATIONAL "GOT GREEK?" STUDY

The Sons of Pericles are encouraging all of its members to participate in a National Student Research Study of young Greek Americans being sponsored by the Next Generation Initiative. The study is the first academically-supervised national study focusing exclusively on college-age students of Greek heritage. The "Got Greek?" online survey, as it is being called, measures how connected students are to our heritage, asking specific questions about their own experience and their families' participation in such organizations as AHEPA, Journey to Greece, the Church, GOYA, Greek School, etc.

Please take a moment to fill out the survey to make sure that the experiences of the youth from the AHEPA Family are not left out of this study.
