November 2013 - Issue 19
Supreme President's Message
I wanted to start off by saying what an honor and privilege it truly is to serve this wonderful organization as your Supreme President. Working together with the Supreme Lodge and our chapters, this promises to be a very successful year! The Supreme Lodge this year consists of all East Coast members, but we plan to travel all over the United States and Canada to bring our organization to new heights. The 2013-2014 Supreme Lodge consists of: Supreme President John Ververis (Waterbury, CT), Supreme Vice- President James Googas (Albany, NY), Supreme Secretary Andreas Christou (Albany, NY), Supreme Treasurer Jason Vergados (Boston, MA), Supreme Governor Nikolas Apostolou (Wyckoff, NJ), Supreme Governor Steven Gagas (Waterbury, CT), Supreme Governor Vasilios Mallios (Boston, MA), Supreme Athletic Director Panagiotis Tsevdos (Brooklyn, NY) and National Advisor Jimmy Kokotas (Brooklyn, NY).
The ultimate goal this year is to reach a total of 1,000 members in the US, Canada and Greece. This has been a goal for a couple years now and I truly believe that this year we will finally make it happen. Our record turnout at this past Governor’s Conference was a great start to the year, and it led to the reactivation of the Pittsburgh chapter, our first chapter reactivation of the year. Before the calendar year is over we plan to initiate chapters in Connecticut, New York, Phoenix, and Washington D.C., and there are a few more areas with high potential. The Supreme Lodge is excited to host its first ever basketball tournament in Waterbury, CT, that will take place on Thanksgiving weekend. There will be more details to follow soon, but please mark your calendars for Saturday November 30th, and Sunday December 1st, 2013.
Along with raising money for our joint national project, FARA, please keep in mind the joint Presidential Project that Maids of Athena Grand President Angela Armstrong and I will be working on. We will be raising money for “Ark of the World,” an orphanage in Athens, Greece with over 300 underprivileged children. We will be working with the Achilles Youth, our brothers and sisters in the AHEPA Family all the way in Australia. The Achilles Youth is the youth organization of AHEPA Australasia, and we plan to work closely with them this year in an effort to bring our organizations closer together and raise money for this worthy cause.
Thank you in advance for all your support and I am very excited to work with all of you this upcoming year.
Proud to be a Son!

Successful Governor's Conference Starts the Year Off Strong
The weekend of September 13-15 saw Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena from across the United States and Canada once again together in Washington D.C. for the Annual AHEPA Family District Governor’s Conference, held at the Washington Hilton Hotel. This year’s conference saw the highest attendance in recent history for this event, with a record 12 chapters sending over thirty representatives. Brothers from Albany, Brooklyn, Boston, Canton, Chicago, Merrillville, Montreal, Pittsburgh, Toms River, Toronto, Waterbury and Wyckoff were present at the Sons of Pericles meeting.
The weekend started off with an AHEPA Family outing to a Washington Nationals baseball game on Friday night, where the entire AHEPA Family enjoyed each other’s company and an exciting game at Nationals Park. Saturday morning began with our business meetings, with a special honor, as the Supreme Lodge opened up the meeting with the initiation and reactivation of the Poseidon #40 chapter of Pittsburgh, PA. The meetings then continued on with the Chapter Presidents and representatives updating the meeting body about their chapters, and the Supreme Lodge conducted a brainstorming session with the representatives, outlining their goals and committee plans for the year. In addition, the Sons and Maids, who once again will be fundraising for the Friedrich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) as their joint National Project, had the privilege of having Kyle Bryant, a representative from FARA as their guest speaker. This made the Sons and Maids delegation humbled at the work conducted during the 2012-2013 year in raising $28,000 for FARA, and motivated both organizations to continue their efforts with the goal of exceeding last year’s total. The weekend concluded with the Annual AHEPA Family Rooftop Reception at AHEPA Headquarters on Saturday night, serving as a final opportunity for the AHEPA Family to come together, celebrate this weekend and look forward to the exciting year ahead.

Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena 2013-2014 National Project
The Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena are very excited to announce once again FARA will be our Joint National Project. After having an extremely successful 2012-2013 year in which we surpassed our goal of $25,000.00, the Sons and Maids once again decided to choose FARA (Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance). FARA is a national organization dedicated to curing Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), a debilitating, life-shortening, degenerative neuro-muscular disorder. Donations to FARA have helped provide support for basic and translational FA research, pharmaceutical/ biotech drug development, clinical trials, and scientific conferences.
The Sons and Maids National Lodges believe that this project provides an opportunity to raise more money than we have in the past. This year the Committee Chairs from the Sons and Maids National Lodges (Penelope Alefantis, Nick Apostolou, & Vasili Mallios) have been active in conversation and setting the foundation for some great fundraising events.
If you're feeling lucky, take a chance at our “High Rollers Raffle”. Only 100 raffle tickets being sold for $100 a piece, and the winning ticket will be pulled at the Boston New Year’s Eve Party for a chance to win a $3,000 grand prize. Following the conclusion of the High Rollers raffle, we will begin selling our traditional 50/50 raffle tickets until the day of the drawing at the Grand Banquet of the Supreme Convention in New Orleans, LA. The ticket prices are 1 ticket for $10 and 5 tickets for $40, and prizes will be as follows: 1st prize up to $4,000.00, 2nd prize up to $2,500.00, and 3rd prize up to $1,000.00.
We thank you for your continued support for our worthy cause. If you have questions regarding national project or would like to make a donation please contact Supreme Governors Nick Apostolou (email@example.com) or Vasili Mallios (firstname.lastname@example.org).
1st Sons of Pericles Thanksgiving Weekend Basketball Tournament in Connecticut
The Supreme Lodge has started to plan for our First Annual Waterbury Basketball Tournament, which will be held November 30-December 1, 2013 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Waterbury, CT. The tournament will start Saturday morning around 9:00AM, with the majority of the games being played on Saturday. We would like to reach out to the local teams and see if they would be willing to play the earlier games since some teams may be coming from out of state. Sunday, we would like to only have two games: the semifinal and final matches, and the games will run from 10:00AM-1:30 PM on Sunday.
Supreme President John Ververis is also working to coordinate an after-hours event at a Greek owned restaurant in the area on Saturday night. More details including the package price and weekend events will be released in the coming weeks.
Anyone interested in submitting a team to the tournament should contact Sons of Pericles Supreme Athletic Director Panagiotis Tsevdos at email@example.com or 718-704-6600 as soon as possible.
Canton Sons Host Successful Outing
On Sunday September 29th, the Sons of the William McKinley Chapter #38 in Canton, Ohio hosted a paintball outing as a way to build comradery and friendship amongst the chapter. The event was successful for this growing chapter, including seven current members, one past member, three Maids of the Canton chapter and a few others in attendance.
Those who attended raved about the event and there was much talk about the next time a paintball outing would happen. That being said, we can only build and improve from here, which is a major victory for our chapters and community.
With fun and good times, the Canton Sons and Maids are able to build upon this event and look forward to an eventful and successful upcoming year together, thriving from each others support and energy.
Boston SOP 2nd Annual New Year's Eve Party
The Boston Sons of Pericles chapter, Hub 27, held a major fundraising event for the national project The Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), selling out 250 tickets for the 2012 Boston SOP New Year’s Eve Party at the Winthrop Yacht Club in Winthrop, MA, which overlooked the water, Boston city skyline and fireworks. The inaugural event was a major undertaking which was due in part to the collaborative efforts of Alex Orphanos and Billy Mallios as co-chairs and the Boston Sons chapter as a whole working together. While the evening was a celebration of Greek culture, it was also a great opportunity to promote our organization’s virtues of philanthropy and Hellenism. Furthermore, the event stemmed large enthusiasm for the organization and AHEPA overall. By far, the greatest mark of success, which was a direct result of the event, was the Boston SOP's donation of $5,300 to the national project. The Sons of Hub 27, were also able to financially sponsor a new Maids of Athena chapter in Boston which has been growing stronger ever since.
This coming New Year’s Eve 2013, we are pleased to announce the Second Annual Boston SOP New Year’s Eve Party at the same beautiful location, the Winthrop Yacht Club, with New England’s number one Greek DJ Thrilla. For more information on this event, please email BostonSOPNYE@gmail.com or contact Chapter President Alex Orphanos at 781-929-6708. As always, we graciously accept your support in all we do, and we are proud to be Sons!
New Sons Chapter Chartered in Clifton, NJ
In an initiation ceremony held at the District 5 Basketball Tournament held in Wyckoff NJ, ten new Sons were initiated into the Junior Order of AHEPA. Conducting the initiation ceremony was Supreme Governor Nick Apostolou, then President of the hosting Patritha Chapter #317. The initiates include members of a newly chartered chapter in Clifton, NJ.
For now, the chapter will be known as the Liberty Chapter #330, which is the same name as their AHEPA chapter. Leading the Clifton group is Dimitri Tsounakis, who organized the initiates and worked to secure a corporate sponsor, Alma Bank, for their basketball team. Pictured are members of the Liberty chapter along with two other initiates from Wyckoff. The tournament was held on the weekend of June 1 – 2.
